Focus is important for athletes to get into their flow state and perform at their physical and mental peaks. There are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to focusing, and getting into the flow state. I talked about them in this podcast episode and give you some tips on how to get into your flow state. Aromatherapy can be a very effective trigger for helping you to get into your flow state and improve focus, mental clarity and athletic performance. Essential oils can bring balance to the brain by calming an anxious mind or energizing a sluggish one.
Here are my favorite and most effective essential oils for improving focus.
1. Bergamot
Citrus oils are great for reducing feelings of anxiety and boosting energy levels. Of the citrus oils, my favorite is bergamot because it smells like citrus with a hint of floral. I put 5-10 drops in my home office diffuser when I really need to focus on getting some work done.
2. Douglas fir
Douglas Fir essential oil is extracted from the leaves and branches of this conifer tree and has the power to create a very stimulating environment while also providing a grounding effect. The smell is divine – like a freshly cut Christmas tree, so it’s woody, fresh and clean. I like to combine 4-5 drops of Douglas Fir with 2-3 drops of lemon essential oil in my diffuser when I want to focus on work-related tasks.
3. Align Centering Blend
This blend combines bergamot, coriander, marjoram, peppermint, jasmine and rose into one incredible scent that promotes a flow state during any activity. I use this particular blend during yoga class because it creates a harmonious and calm atmosphere, and helps me focus on my practice rather than everything else going on in my life. Before each class, I apply several drops of Align Centering Blend to each of my wrists and to the bottoms of my feet.
4. Balance Grounding Blend
This incredibly smelling grounding blend is my favorite one to apply right before a game – especially if I’m experiencing any pre-game jitters. This Balance Grounding Blend helps me to relax and boosts my focus almost immediately. I apply 1-2 drops on my wrists, behind my ears and on the bottoms of my feet. Then I’ll apply 1-2 more drops to my hands and inhale for 5-10 deep breaths. The combination of the breathing and the smell helps to activate my vagus nerve and makes me feel so much more focused during my game. I also love using it as a perfume because it smells that good!
5. Ylang Ylang
Ylang ylang essential oil provides many benefits to the brain and has a pleasant aroma which is why it’s often used in making perfumes as well as in aromatherapy. It helps the brain stay focused and creates a positive environment. As a powerful antioxidant, it also has nourishing and protective properties so diffusing it is a win-win during work hours. I add 4 drops of Ylang Ylang with 2 drops of grapefruit essential oil to help me stay alert and focused -, particularly on days where I haven’t slept very well the night before.
